Walking Miles for a Sip
Fatima’s mornings began long before the sun rose over her village in the Herat province. With an old metal container balanced on her head, she and other women walked miles to the nearest well. The journey was grueling, but without it, their families would go thirsty.
One day, word spread that an organization was helping dig wells closer to their homes. Fatima joined the effort, helping clear the rocky terrain. Weeks later, when water gushed out of the new well for the first time, the village erupted in joy. Fatima smiled, knowing that her younger sister wouldn’t have to walk miles for water anymore.
With access to clean water, Fatima now had more time for herself—and for the first time, she began learning how to read.
